REACH Dr. Seth Katz featured on Fox TV Reproductive Ethics Report

by Morgan Fogarty, WCCB-TV, Fox Charlotte

(February 6, 2009)—After two and half years and thousands of dollars on in vitro fertilization (or IVF) 36-year-old Jennifer Gray finally holds two month old Jack in her arms.  She says, "If I was still going through the process it would be very, very frustrating to me."

Gray's talking about the California woman who just gave birth to IVF octuplets and Gray says it's frustrating for a few reasons: health. Ethics. And money.

Many couples mortgage their home or take out loans to pay for IVF.  The octuplet mom reportedly has no job and no home of her own.  Government numbers show that for a single mother, it could cost more than $2.5 million to raise 14 children until they are 18 years old.

Dr. Seth Katz says he was disappointed to hear of octuplets born from IVF because he works hard to reduce the risk of "high order multiple pregnancies" with his patients.  In fact, the triplet rate at his clinic is under 2%.  "In general our rule of thumb is two embryos in women under the age of 40," says Katz, watch the report...

On "Charlotte Today," Dr. Nancy Teaff discussed "single mothers by choice" and other fertility options for women in their 30s and older, on WCNC-TV Channel 6, August 11.

Listen to REACH's Dr. Nancy Teaff and REACH patient Nicole Epstein on WBT radio "Health Headlines" with Stacey Simms, broadcast May 30. Dr. Teaff helped Nicole have a child on her own before her eggs were no longer viable, much like the JLo character in the film, "The Back Up Plan."
